Having bagged the PSL Player the Season award, Orlando Pirates winger Thembinkosi Lorch was expected to follow in the footsteps of his last two predecessors by securing a move overseas.

Lebohang Manyama and Percy Tau each claimed the top accolade, in 2017 and 2018 respectively, which somehow became their ticket to Europe.

After a breakthrough season with the Buccaneers, stars seem to have aligned for the Free State-born Lorch, particularly after transferring his domestic form to the international stage with an unforgettable first start in Bafana colours, where he broke Egypt’s hearts in the Africa Cup of Nations.

However, the 25-year-old remains a Pirates player after the close of the transfer window, and fans will once again look to him to inspire the club to a successful campaign.

Lorch, who has had very few engagements with the media since returning from Egypt, finally fronted up to reporters ahead of the Buccaneers’ return to action, and had to field the inevitable question about his aspirations to play overseas.

“I had offers from clubs overseas, but I think the offers were not good for both the team and me. I have a contract with Pirates, and I have to focus and play as well as do my best,” Lorch told media on Wednesday.

No point to prove

Lorch has reportedly been scouted by Royal Union Saint Gilloise in Belgium, the club where Tau turned out on loan in his first season in Europe, as well as French Ligue 2 outfit Dijon.

This is after he finished with 15 goals and five assists in all competitions for the Buccaneers.

The player is satisfied without he’s gone about his business, even with some challenging him to do more.

“I have had some coaches telling me that I need to score more goals and things like that, but I feel I have done my part. I don’t have to prove (anything) to anyone. I just have to play my football and help the team to win games,” said Lorch.

Lorch is yet to score in the ongoing season, but has an opportunity to do so against his former club at Orlando Stadium on Saturday.

Kick off is at 18:00.
